Crying [:'(] Two new dogs result in trips to the vet

    Hello Everyone!

I've been involved in the rescue of my chosen breed, the Weimaraner for over ten years.  My daughter recently relocated to Australia and was unable to take her two dogs, a border collie mix and a Canaan Dog.  She had just a short time before the move, and asked if I would rehome them for her.  It broke her heart, [:'(] but the expense and uncertaintly of the time overseas made this her only option.  I really wanted to foster the Canaan Dog until her return, since he is so amazing with small children, and she has a toddler, and another baby on the way.  He is such a perfect family dog; however , one of my own Weimaraners has never cared too much for him, and the growls and raised hackles escalated to stitches after a few months at my home (by my dog, not the visitor).  I'm a dog trainer and behaviorist, and have tried everything in my tool bag to amend the problem to no avail.  I'm now sincerely looking to rehome both of these dogs.  The border collie gets along fine with my three Weims, but needs more activity than I am prepared to give him to keep him happy.  He needs an active family.  These dogs do not need to be rehomed together.  My dogs are now seniors, and tracking is all the formal engagement they need at this timeof their lives.  I live in Huntsville, AL and would like to rehome them within a 75mile radious so I can keep in touch.  Once dogs are in my family, they area part of my family.  This is tough on me to let these two boys go, and I would want to do a home visit, and veterinarian reference check to make sure they were going to a home in which they would be happy and healthy in.  Smile

Sounds like a dominance issue to me. It also sounds like the new dog hasn't been at your home for very long. What kind of techniques have you tried? Also, are you sure you're the "dominant dog" in your house? If not, it's more than likely that your fella feels threatened by the new guy because he considers himself the leader in your household.

it may also be a space issue. try to walk them together, bring them to a dog park...anything to get both of them onto a neutral turf so that neither can feel like they are being intruded. It could possibly be the new dog, too, starting the fights. Make sure to watch their behavior around eachother and make the necessary corrections to both.
